Assistant Project Engineer (Civil & Infrastructure)

The Assistant Project Engineer must work safely and productively on various sized Civil and Infrastructure project sites. A successful candidate in this role must be highly motivated and willing to complete any task assigned, along with performing the essential duties of the Assistant Project Engineer position. All employees are expected to communicate, build relationships with other team members and use good judgment at all times. The Assistant Project Engineer is expected to have the ability to perform all duties of the positions preceding it in its specific career path, while being responsible and accountable to complete any other tasks assigned.

Duties

  • Analyze site restrictions, haul paths, concrete conveyance setup locations, type of material hoisting equipment required, create a site logistics plan (if applicable) and submit site logistics plan to client for approval
  • Assist Project Manager with buying out vendors
  • Attend project progress meetings along with Project Manager and Superintendent to communicate and solve any issues on the project and record project progress meeting minutes
  • Collaborate with Project Manager to determine any special close out procedures required
  • Collaborate with Project Manager (or client if Project Manager delegates) to determine how the collection of work orders shall be grouped and presented as a Proposed Change Order
  • Collaborate with Project Manager to track the status of Proposed Change Orders on a periodic basis
  • Collaborate with Project Manager, Superintendent and any other project team members and lead the generation of a Lessons Learned document
  • Collaborate with Superintendent and update project schedule on a weekly basis. Share the updated schedule with internal and external team members and client (if directed by Project Manager)
  • Collect the time & material work orders from the superintendent, price the work orders (based on the time & material rates submitted to the client) and save the signed versions as well as the priced versions of the work orders in the applicable project folder
  • Communicate client’s response to Requests For Information to all team members and incorporate / hyperlink the responses into the electronic drawing set
  • Communicate with Superintendent to determine the actual progress, document any delays being experienced onsite and notify the Project Manager
  • Compile priced work orders into a work order tracking log
  • Create baseline project schedule in Microsoft Project by collaborating with PM and Superintendent
  • Create detailed cost comparisons to assist the Project Manager in special material buyout decisions
  • Distribute any newly released or revised contract documents to the appropriate team members (internal and external)
  • Engage precast supplier and other applicable vendors in the shop drawing process
  • Ensure that all materials and equipment are being delivered per the current project schedule
  • Establish communication channel between WBI and client (contacts, distribution groups, maps, protocols, etc.)
  • Generate and maintain a log to track all precast structure, piping, fitting and aggregate deliveries
  • Generate and maintain a log to track all WBI Proposed Change Orders (along with corresponding client Change Order), Request For Information and Submittals
  • Generate new Proposed Change Orders in project management software for any additions or subtractions to the contract sum amount as directed by the Project Manager
  • Generate purchase orders for vendors and send to vendors for execution after Project Manager's approval
  • Generate subcontracts for subcontractors and send to subcontractors for execution after Project Manager's approval
  • Identify possible vendors and send out Requests for Quotation for special materials (items not generally stocked and purchased by WBI's internal distribution center) such as precast structures, piping, fittings, etc.
  • Modify, void, approve and interface Proposed Change Orders in project management software as necessary based upon the approvals, rejections and modifications from the client
  • Notify Project Manager when any subcontractors / vendors are not meeting project schedule for submittals / deliveries so that Project Manager can generate and send a letter of non-compliance
  • Organize electronic drawing sets, hyperlink pages / sections / details and markup pages with applicable notes / reference information
  • Organize project document filing system and manage appropriate project level access for all external team members
  • Request access to project documents from client in specific file formats (.pdf, .dwg, .rvt, .ifc, etc.)
  • Review contract documents and submit Requests For Information to the client for clarification of any discrepancies and/or requests of additional information
  • Review shop drawings for errors and send back to vendor to make any necessary corrections prior to submitting to client for approval
  • Schedule delivery and setup of onsite temporary facilities (office trailer, internet service, utilities, holding tanks, etc.)
  • Schedule the demobilization and cut off of all temporary facilities, internet service and utilities
  • Submit Project Manager approved baseline / updated schedules to client
  • Submit shop drawings and material submittals to client for engineer / architect approval
  • Submit WBI time and material rates to client if they were not submitted as part of the proposal
  • Take jobsite progress photos (if allowed by client) on a weekly to bi-weekly basis and file them in the appropriate job folder
  • Track status of submittal approvals and communicate to client and WBI team regarding any past due submittal approvals
  • Transmit any required as-built drawings to client
  • Participate as a member of a field crew and perform assigned tasks as part of the field based segment of the project engineering training program
  • Assist project engineers with assigned tasks as part of the office based segment of the project engineering training program
